In the cold of a January night in 2022, the life of a 36-year-old Black man, Andre Brown, was cut short in Bridgeport, Connecticut. On the evening of January 2nd, police responded to a call of a person shot on Marcel Street. There, in the front yard of a residence, they found Andre Brown suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to St. Vincent's Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he died a short time later.
Investigations into the shooting quickly pointed to
an isolated incident, with authorities believing Brown knew his attacker. Friends of Brown, who described him as a loving and jovial person, recounted that he had gone outside to speak with a woman he knew just before the gunshots rang out. Brown, who was born in Jamaica and had moved to Connecticut about five years prior after living in the Bronx, New York, was a father to a young son.
The woman Brown went to meet was his former girlfriend, Iyana Reynolds. Earlier that same day, Reynolds had reportedly thrown Brown out of their shared apartment on North Avenue. That night, she appeared at the Marcel Street home where Brown was staying, demanding to see him. Despite the cold and Brown not being properly dressed, she insisted he come outside. A witness reported hearing gunshots shortly after Brown went out to speak with her. The witness then saw Reynolds speeding away from the scene in her silver Mercedes SUV. Before collapsing, Brown managed to say, "They shot me, I'm going to die".
Following the shooting, Reynolds fled, prompting a manhunt that extended beyond the United States. She was eventually tracked to Montego Bay, Jamaica, by the U.S. Marshals Connecticut Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Bridgeport Police Department. In July 2023, she was apprehended by the Jamaican Fugitive Apprehension team. Reynolds waived her right to an extradition hearing and was returned to the United States in September 2023 to face charges of murder and carrying a pistol without a permit. Her bond was set at $3 million, with the judge citing a significant risk of flight. Police later located her abandoned Mercedes SUV in the Bronx.
