On a summer evening in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the life of a young Black/African American man, 21-year-old Tyler Ballew, was cut tragically short. It was Thursday, June 25, 2020, and Ballew was on Huntington Road with several friends. The group had reportedly gathered to shoot a rap music video when gunfire suddenly erupted in what authorities described as a drive-by shooting. Ballew was struck in the head and collapsed right there on the sidewalk. Rushed by medics to Bridgeport Hospital, he was pronounced dead. The attack, which occurred just before 8 p.m., also injured three of his companions—two females and another male—who were sitting in a vehicle. They survived, having sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
In the immediate aftermath, the investigation into Ballew's death was met with a wall of silence. Police officials stated that the surviving victims were uncooperative, providing no answers about what had transpired. Detectives quickly concluded that this was not a random act of violence; they believed all the victims were intended targets. The shooting was the city's ninth homicide of the year and part of a string of violent encounters that week, which police attributed to long-standing disputes between various groups in Bridgeport. Ballew himself had a troubled past, having been released from prison only weeks before his death. However, a significant development came in 2021 as part of a sweeping federal investigation into gang-related violence and drug trafficking in Bridgeport. A federal grand jury returned an indictment charging multiple alleged members of the East End gang with a racketeering conspiracy that included several murders. According to the indictment, a 24-year-old man named Kyran Dangerfield, along with an associate who was since deceased and another individual, were responsible for the murder of Tyler Ballew. The indictment alleged that Ballew was a member or associate of the rival Original North End, or O.N.E., gang, framing his death as a targeted killing in an ongoing and violent feud.
