On a cold February day in 1926, the community of Spadra, Arkansas, was shaken by the violent death of one of its own. William A. Campbell, a 44-year-old male Deputy Sheriff with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life in the line of duty. His death on Saturday, February 20, 1926, cut short a life dedicated to public service and left a void in the hearts of those who knew him.
The fateful day began with a call for a welfare check.
A concerned father reached out to the sheriff's office, unable to get in touch with his adult daughter. Deputy Campbell, along with another deputy, was dispatched to her home on the outskirts of Spadra to ensure her well-being. What should have been a routine check quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation. Upon their arrival, the deputies were met with gunfire. The woman's husband, a man who had previously been a patient at the state insane asylum, opened fire on the officers.
In the ensuing chaos, Deputy Campbell was fatally wounded. The shooter fled the scene, sparking a manhunt and casting a pall of fear over the small Arkansas town. The search for the armed and dangerous man, however, was short-lived. The following day, in a surprising turn of events, the suspect voluntarily surrendered to the authorities.
Following his surrender, the man was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Deputy Sheriff Campbell's death. William A. Campbell was survived by his wife, who was left to mourn the sudden and tragic loss of her husband.
