On April 16, 1963, Patrolman Jerrell P. Vaughan of the North Little Rock Police Department was fatally shot during a traffic stop on State Highway 130, approximately three miles southeast of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Earlier that evening, the occupants of the vehicle had been involved in a barroom altercation. As Patrolman Vaughan approached the vehicle, he was shot once in the chest. Despite his critical injury, he managed to return fire, striking the assailant five times.
