In the early hours of a June morning in Forrest City, Arkansas, a dedicated police officer's life was tragically cut short. Lewis D. Jones, Jr., a 34-year-old man serving as a Patrol Officer with the Forrest City Police Department, was working an off-duty security assignment at the Players Palace nightclub on Turner Avenue. A fight broke out inside the club, and Jones, along with another officer, escorted the individuals involved outside to de-escalate the situation.
A short time later,
as the officers went to check on the men in the parking lot, they were met with a sudden barrage of gunfire. A single bullet struck Jones in the chest. Despite the immediate danger, both officers were able to return fire, wounding the assailant in the leg as he fled the scene. Officer Jones was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead on June 4, 2000.
The man responsible for the senseless act of violence was later identified as 25-year-old Jeffrey B. Gibson. He was apprehended later that same day. Gibson was subsequently charged with capital murder. In a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison. During the court proceedings, Gibson offered an apology to the family of the fallen officer.
Officer Lewis D. Jones, Jr. had been with the Forrest City Police Department for three years and was survived by his two children and his mother. His death left a void in the community and among his fellow officers, who remembered him as a great person who would encourage his colleagues when they were down.
