In the summer of 2015, on July 5th, the life of 32-year-old Cameron S. Johnson, a Black male, was cut tragically short in El Dorado, Arkansas. In the parking lot of the Hillsboro Manor apartment complex, Johnson was found lying face down between two vehicles in a pool of blood. An autopsy would later confirm that he had died from a single gunshot wound to the right side of his neck, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
The discovery of a nine-millimeter shell casing near his body provided an early clue for investigators in a case that would slowly unfold.
Witnesses at the scene painted a fragmented picture of Johnson's final moments. A ten-year-old girl recalled seeing him talking with a man named Shakorey Wade shortly before the fatal shot rang out. Another witness testified to seeing an individual named Keet going through Johnson's pockets and taking a black backpack from his vehicle in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. The investigation soon led police to identify 22-year-old Jeremiah Green as a suspect in the murder. The day after the shooting, Green’s father brought him to the El Dorado Police Department.
Jeremiah Green was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, with his bond set at a formidable one million dollars. As the legal process moved forward, another individual, Shakorey Wade, was also charged with capital murder in connection with Johnson's death. During Green’s jury trial, further details of the investigation came to light. Testimony revealed a conversation in which Green's father allegedly showed a nine-millimeter handgun to friends and stated it was the murder weapon police were looking for, a claim the father denied on the stand.
Ultimately, a Union County Circuit Court jury found Jeremiah Green guilty of first-degree murder. His conviction also included enhancements for committing the murder in the presence of a child and for using a firearm. The court sentenced Green to a total of eighty years in prison for his role in the death of Cameron S. Johnson, bringing a measure of closure to a violent chapter in the community's history.
