In the summer of 2022, the life of 29-year-old Nathan Rainey Jr., a Black male from El Dorado, Arkansas, was tragically cut short. On the evening of August 6th, police responded to a call at the Hillsboro Townhouse Apartments. Inside his own apartment, they discovered Rainey with a fatal gunshot wound to his stomach; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The community was left shaken by the sudden and violent loss of a young man known for his love of music.
The investigation into Rainey's death quickly progressed when, later that same day, a 24-year-old man named Jarday Quas Keese turned himself in to the authorities. Keese confessed to the shooting, providing his account of the events that transpired. He claimed that a group had been drinking near Rainey's apartment when an argument broke out. According to Keese, the situation escalated when Rainey allegedly pointed a gun at him, prompting Keese to shoot in response before fleeing the scene.
Jarday Quas Keese was subsequently arrested and booked into the Union County jail, with his bond set at $350,000. In February 2024, the legal proceedings came to a close when Keese accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to the murder of Nathan Rainey Jr. and was sentenced to serve 30 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. For Rainey's family, the pain of his loss was compounded by a past tragedy; they had previously lost another son, Deddrick Williams, to gun violence in 2013. Nathan Rainey Jr. leaves behind a son, Kingston Amari Rainey, his parents, and siblings who continue to mourn their profound loss.
