In the late summer of 2015, a family tragedy unfolded in Forrest City, Arkansas, ending in the death of 29-year-old Martesz DeAngelo Childers Sr., a Black male. On Monday, September 7, 2015, what began as a dispute over money escalated into a fatal encounter.
Childers had accused his 16-year-old nephew of stealing money from him, leading to a heated argument. The confrontation took a tragic turn when the teenager allegedly shot his uncle.
First responders found Childers with apparent gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital for medical attention, but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officers began a search for the teenage suspect. The pursuit ended at the home of the boy's father, where, after a foot chase, the 16-year-old was apprehended. Inside the residence, police discovered the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting.
The Forrest City Police Department announced that the juvenile would be charged as an adult with first-degree murder. He also faced an additional charge for possession of a firearm by a minor. Forrest City Police Chief Deon Lee expressed the sorrow of the situation, stating, "It is tragic that a family has to endure a loss especially by the hands of another loved one."
