In the fading light of a Monday afternoon in November 2016, the life of 15-year-old Decorion Jones was irrevocably altered on the south side of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Responders discovered the young man with a gunshot wound, a stark and tragic scene that shattered the day's normalcy. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical staff fought to save him, but his injuries proved too severe.
Decorion Jones, a male, passed away the following Tuesday.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. By the same Tuesday that Jones succumbed to his injuries, police had identified a suspect. A 17-year-old male was arrested without incident in connection with the fatal shooting. He was subsequently held on a charge of first-degree murder, a grave accusation for a life so young.
While an arrest was made, the community was left with lingering questions. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement officials stated that they had not yet determined a motive for the shooting that ended a young life and forever changed another. The body of Decorion Jones was sent to the state medical examiner to undergo an autopsy, a necessary step to officially confirm the cause of his untimely death.
