In the winter of 2016, a life was tragically cut short in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Pedro Omar Baez Esperanza, a 31-year-old male, was found with a gunshot wound in the vicinity of 14th and Vine streets on a Tuesday afternoon in November. First responders rushed him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them shortly after arrival.
The incident was investigated by the North Little Rock Police Department as a homicide.
In the course of their investigation, authorities identified a suspect, Charles Brent Gant. A little over a week after Esperanza's death, Gant was located and apprehended in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting. The arrest was reportedly based on the testimony of a single witness who claimed to have seen the slaying. At the time of his arrest for the murder charge, Gant was already an inmate in the Florida prison system, serving time for drug convictions.
The legal proceedings against Charles Brent Gant took an unexpected turn in October of 2017. Prosecutors in Arkansas made the decision to drop the first-degree murder charge against him. This decision was precipitated by the sole witness in the case recanting their identification and testimony. With the foundational evidence for the prosecution's case withdrawn, the charges were dismissed. Following the dismissal, arrangements were made for Gant to be returned to Florida to continue serving his sentence for his prior drug convictions.
