On February 23, 2017, James Appleton, a 59-year-old resident of Gateway, Arkansas, was found deceased in his vehicle on Gann Ridge Road near Garfield. He had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Appleton was employed by the Gateway water department and was known in the community for his work.
