In the summer of 2018, the life of a promising 17-year-old was tragically cut short on the streets of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Ke'Andre Kyrek Johnson, a Black male with aspirations of a career in music, was fatally shot on the evening of Thursday, June 21, 2018. The incident unfolded near the intersection of West 25th Avenue and South Orange Street, a location that would become the final scene of the young man's life.
Police were called to the area and discovered a red Honda, inside of
which Johnson had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite any efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The violence of that evening also claimed the life of another 17-year-old, Kelvonte K. Trammell, who was with Johnson in the vehicle. The brazen nature of the attack sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the devastating impact of gun violence on its youth.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to four teenage suspects. Dontarrius Brown, 18; Jermaine Jackson Jr., 18; Carl Turner Jr., 18; and Trevonte Langrell, 17, were arrested in connection with the deadly shooting. According to reports, the suspects allegedly exited a grey Mercury Grand Marquis armed with rifles and opened fire on the red Honda occupied by Johnson and Trammell.
The four individuals were each charged with two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Johnson and Trammell, in addition to 17 counts of committing a terroristic act. Johnson, known by his rap moniker 'Lil Dre,' had just released his first song earlier that year and was remembered by loved ones for the softer side that lay beneath his musical persona. His death was a profound loss for his family, friends, and a community left to grapple with the senseless violence that silenced a young voice.
