In the late afternoon of a Monday in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the lives of two young men tragically intersected, leaving one dead and the other facing a murder charge. On November 4, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., police responded to a call of a shooting in the parking lot of the Suzanne Apartments located at 2123 S. Blake Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered the unresponsive body of 22-year-old Taron Jerrell Dismuke, a Black male, lying on the ground on the north side of the apartment
complex.
Emergency medical personnel were unable to revive Dismuke, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office. The cause of death was determined to be from a gunshot wound. As detectives began their investigation into the homicide, cordoning off the area and searching for evidence, the man suspected of pulling the trigger made a decision that would alter the course of the investigation.
Roughly two hours after the fatal shooting, at around 6:30 p.m., 22-year-old Leon Jermaine Johnson turned himself in to the Pine Bluff Police Department. He was taken into custody by detectives and slated to be questioned about the events that led to Dismuke's death. Following his interview, Johnson was set to be transported to the W.C. Dub Brassell Detention Center.
Authorities have announced that Leon Jermaine Johnson faces a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting of Taron Jerrell Dismuke. The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement continues to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses to piece together the circumstances that culminated in the violent end to a young man's life in an apartment complex parking lot.
