The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Martin E. Tavarez-Torres, who was also the nephew of the restaurant's owner. Family members of Reyes revealed to investigators their belief that the shooting was connected to a significant financial windfall. The night before his death, Reyes had reportedly won a substantial amount of money on a slot machine, with estimates ranging from $20,000 to $200,000. It is believed that Tavarez-Torres was with Reyes at the time of the win. Authorities learned that Tavarez-Torres had even assisted Reyes in obtaining a passport in Houston, with plans to help him cash the winning ticket. Tragically, Reyes, a father to twin boys, never had the chance to claim his prize.
