In the autumn of 1973, a tragic event unfolded in Tucson, Arizona, forever altering the lives of a young couple. On November 3, 1973, Patricia Sandberg and her husband, Marine Captain Michael Sandberg, age 28, were found murdered in their condominium. The discovery of their bodies was prompted by authorities in California who had arrested two men, Douglas Edward Gretzler and Willie Luther Steelman, driving Michael Sandberg's car.
The investigation that followed revealed a horrifying
crime spree. Gretzler and Steelman, an escapee from a mental hospital, had embarked on a violent rampage that spanned two states. After killing the Sandbergs, they continued to California, where just three days later, on November 6, they robbed a grocery store owner and brutally murdered nine people in his home, including two young children. The duo was apprehended two days after the California massacre.
While in custody, Gretzler confessed to the murders of Patricia and Michael Sandberg. The fingerprints lifted from the Sandbergs' home matched those of both Gretzler and Steelman. Their string of violent crimes was part of an effort to flee Tucson after committing another murder. They had kidnapped a man to steal his car, but he escaped, forcing them to abandon the vehicle near the Sandbergs' home. It was there that they encountered Michael Sandberg washing his car and their deadly path intersected with the unsuspecting couple.
Douglas Gretzler and Willie Steelman were ultimately held accountable for their numerous crimes. They were convicted of the murders of Patricia and Michael Sandberg, among their many other victims. Steelman died in prison in 1987. After spending over two decades on death row, Douglas Edward Gretzler was executed in Arizona on June 4, 1998, for his role in the slayings. Reports indicated that before his execution, Gretzler had written letters of apology to the families of his victims.
