In the late summer of 1992, a devastating discovery was made in Phoenix, Arizona, that left a community in shock and a crime unsolved to this day. On the afternoon of August 29th, the bodies of the Zubia family were found slain outside their residence located at 701 East Baseline Road. Among the victims was 9-year-old Rocio Zubia.
The Zubia family, who had immigrated to the United States from Chihuahua, Mexico, were all found together.
Rocio, a young female of Hispanic descent, was discovered alongside her parents, 28-year-old Eloy Zubia and 30-year-old Librada Zubia Hernandez, her 6-year-old brother, Eloy Zubia Jr., and her 19-year-old uncle, Gabriel Hernandez. The scene was described as a brutal one, with all five family members having been shot execution-style in a dirt lot near their South Phoenix home. A neighbor later reported hearing a series of gunshots in the early hours of that Saturday, describing a pause between two sets of shots.
Despite the horrific nature of the crime, the motive behind the killings has remained elusive. Investigators ruled out both robbery and a murder-suicide as possibilities. Early in the investigation, there was a theory that the murders could be connected to a small debt Eloy Sr. may have owed, but this was eventually dismissed. Law enforcement did not find evidence to suggest the killings were related to drug or gang activity.
Decades have passed since the tragic event, and the case of the Zubia family massacre has grown cold. There have been no arrests made in connection with the five murders, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Phoenix Police Department has invested significant resources into the investigation over the years, but the case remains an open and unsolved tragedy.
