In the early morning hours of July 7, 2023, a dispute in a Phoenix, Arizona mobile home park culminated in the shooting death of 31-year-old Stephanie Rebecca Ellico. A female described by her family as vibrant and caring, Ellico was at the residence near Cave Creek Road and Greenway Parkway to help a friend who was in the process of moving out of the home she shared with her boyfriend, Christian Ball.
An altercation erupted between Ellico and the 31-year-old Ball.
During the course of the confrontation, Ball sustained a cut from a bladed instrument. A short time later, the conflict escalated dramatically when Ball produced a firearm and shot Ellico. Emergency services were called to the scene around 7:10 a.m., and Ellico was rushed to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she did not survive her injuries. Her family later described her intervention as a 'brave act of heroism.'
Following the shooting, Phoenix police located and arrested Christian Ball. He was initially booked into jail on weapons charges, as he was a prohibited possessor of a firearm. Authorities indicated that additional charges related to the homicide investigation would be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review. At the time of his arrest, Ball claimed that Ellico had stabbed him before the shooting occurred.
