In the early hours of a Saturday morning in west Phoenix, a house party filled with teenagers took a tragic and fatal turn. On January 16, 2016, 15-year-old Sinclaire Sandoval was fatally shot while attending a gathering with 40 to 60 other young people. The party, held at a residence near 43rd Avenue and Glendale, was attended by individuals ranging in age from 15 to 21.
Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic and frightening end to what had been a social event. One friend of Sinclaire's recounted the harrowing experience of holding her as she died, stating that the party had gotten out of control. Just moments before the gunshot that would end her life, Sinclaire had been taking pictures with her friends in the bathroom. She was discovered on the floor with a gunshot wound to the neck and died at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Phoenix police detained a 16-year-old male in connection with Sinclaire's death. Due to his age, authorities did not publicly release his name.
