In the spring of 2019, a domestic tragedy unfolded in Phoenix, Arizona, culminating in the death of 29-year-old Dasia Patterson. On an April evening, Patterson was shot and killed by her partner, Austin Smith, in their home. The violence that erupted that night also claimed the lives of two of their young daughters, seven-year-old Mayan and five-year-old Nasha.
A third daughter, only three years old at the time, was physically unharmed after hiding under a bed during the incident.
The horrific events began after Smith returned home from a bar and confronted Patterson, accusing her of infidelity. According to police reports, Smith admitted to the killings, stating that he believed he was justified in his actions. After shooting his wife and one of their daughters, he bludgeoned their other daughter to death. He reportedly spared their youngest child because she reminded him of himself.
Following the murders at his home, Smith drove to another location and fatally shot a man named Ron Freeman, whom he suspected of being romantically involved with Patterson. He also wounded two other individuals at that scene before being apprehended by police. Smith was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. The devastating loss of Dasia Patterson and her two young children left their family and community in profound grief.
