In the quiet, gated community of Barrington Estates in Mesa, Arizona, the early morning hours of February 21, 2006, were shattered by the sounds of gunfire and screams. When police responded to the scene, they discovered a horrific tableau inside a Cape Cod-style rental home. Five people had been shot and killed in what appeared to be a brutal, execution-style massacre.
Among the victims was 32-year-old Tammy Lee Morehart Lovell, a female who was found with three gunshot wounds to her head.
The violence that night did not spare her family. Also found dead were her two children, 15-year-old Cassandra Lovell and 10-year-old Jacob Lovell. The other victims were Tammy's live-in boyfriend, 30-year-old Steven Duffy II, and his 18-year-old brother, Shane Duffy. The brutality of the crime was particularly evident in the death of young Jacob, who, in addition to being shot in the forehead, showed signs of blunt force trauma. Investigators quickly determined that this was not a murder-suicide but a calculated act of violence.
The investigation soon focused on William Craig Miller, the former employer of both Tammy Lovell and Steven Duffy. The motive for the mass murder was rooted in a previous crime. Months earlier, in November 2005, Miller had set fire to his own home in Scottsdale in an attempt to collect insurance money. Steven Duffy had assisted him in the arson, but Tammy had convinced him to cooperate with the police. With their testimony, Miller was indicted on arson and fraud charges. Fearing they would testify against him, Miller decided to eliminate them as witnesses.
In March 2006, William Craig Miller was arrested and charged with five counts of first-degree murder, burglary, and multiple counts of solicitation to commit murder. Investigators found evidence linking him to the crime scene, and it was revealed that he had used three different firearms in the killings. In August 2011, a jury found Miller guilty on all counts. He was subsequently sentenced to death for each of the five murders and, as of late 2024, remains on death row in Arizona.
