In the quiet city of Kingman, Arizona, a domestic dispute on March 31, 2009, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 45-year-old Valery Kim Hett. The female victim was fatally shot by her husband, 49-year-old John Timothy Hett, who then ended his own life in a murder-suicide. The incident prompted a significant police response, creating a tense standoff that lasted for hours and drew in multiple law enforcement agencies.
The situation began to unfold in the afternoon when John
Hett contacted the police, cryptically stating that he had shot someone before abruptly hanging up. This call led officers to a residence in the 2400 block of Chambers Avenue. Upon their arrival, they found the home unresponsive to their attempts at contact. Concerned for the safety of the community and the individuals inside, a two-block radius around the house was cordoned off, and nearby residents were evacuated. The scene quickly filled with a heavy police presence, including the Kingman Police Department's mobile command unit, bomb squad, and crime scene unit, as well as personnel from the Kingman Fire Department.
As the hours stretched on with no communication from inside the house, the Bullhead City SWAT and bomb unit were called in to assist, as the Kingman Police Department did not have its own SWAT team. After arriving at 4 p.m., they carefully planned their entry. Before making a move, a remote-controlled robot was deployed to assess the situation inside the home, providing a crucial view of the interior. Finally, at 7:30 p.m., SWAT team members made their entry.
Inside the residence, they discovered the bodies of both Valery and John Hett. The investigation later concluded that John had shot his wife during an argument before turning the gun on himself. Family members had informed the police that John possessed a number of weapons and had expressed his intention not to be taken alive. The couple's teenage son was safely located at his school shortly after the initial 911 call and was placed in the care of relatives.
