In the late afternoon hours in Nashville, Tennessee, a dispute between two teenagers escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 16-year-old Braden Caldwell. The male victim was on the second story of the downtown WeGo bus station on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, when a physical altercation broke out between him and another teen. During the fight, two gunshots were fired, striking Caldwell.
He was rushed to Vanderbilt Pediatrics, but tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Both Caldwell and the alleged shooter were students within the Metro Nashville Public Schools system. Caldwell was a student at the Johnson Alternative Learning Center.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly as Homicide and TITANS Unit detectives, working with Central Precinct officers and WeGo security staff, quickly identified a suspect. WeGo security personnel were familiar with the individual and were able to aid in his identification. The suspect, 15-year-old Shamari Bailey, had fled the scene after the shooting, heading towards 5th Avenue North. By just before 7 p.m. the same evening, authorities located and arrested Bailey at his home in University Court without incident. Bailey was a student at McGavoc High School.
Following his arrest, Shamari Bailey was charged with criminal homicide. The case is being handled in Juvenile Court. In the wake of the tragic event, friends of Braden Caldwell and other regular riders of the WeGo transit system have voiced concerns about the safety at the bus station, prompting discussions about increasing security measures. A friend of Caldwell's mentioned that he and Braden would often get together to create rap music and that Braden had not been frequenting the downtown bus station recently.
