In the quiet darkness of an East Nashville school parking lot on February 8, 2024, the life of 17-year-old Jalen McAdams was tragically cut short. A student of Centennial High School, Jalen was known for his infectious smile and dorky laugh that could light up any room. He was passionate about music, a love that was nurtured throughout his childhood, and cherished spending time with his friends and family.
On that fateful evening, Jalen and his 16-year-old friend, Takeo Bills, drove to
the Meigs Magnet School on Ramsey Street. They arrived in a white Nissan Altima and parked next to a black Honda Accord already in the lot. Inside the Honda were 18-year-old Rico Doss, Jr., and another individual. Doss and his companion then got into the back seat of the Altima with Jalen and Takeo. Shortly after, gunfire erupted, and both Jalen and Takeo were shot. Jalen died at the scene, while Takeo passed away shortly after being transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a drug-related motive. Detectives were able to track the movements of the Honda Accord after it sped away from the scene. This led them to an apartment complex where they gathered information that identified Rico Doss, Jr. as a potential suspect. Doss was taken into custody early the next morning and charged with two counts of criminal homicide. At the time of his arrest for the murders of Jalen and Takeo, Doss was already wanted on an outstanding warrant for attempted criminal homicide in connection with a separate shooting that had occurred just days prior during a marijuana deal that went wrong.
Authorities later identified the second suspect as 17-year-old Ashton Brown, who was also subsequently charged in the deaths of the two teenagers. The loss of Jalen was a devastating blow to his family, who remembered him as a loving and protective young man who always fought for the people he cared about. In the wake of his death, his family pleaded for an end to gun violence, hoping that by sharing their story, they could prevent other families from experiencing such a profound tragedy.
