The young man, a resident of Chapmansboro, was fatally shot on October 11, 2015, while standing outside his car in the James Cayce housing development. He was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that Patterson had traveled to the location with the intention of buying cocaine. Instead, he was met by individuals who intended to rob him. During the course of the robbery, Patterson was shot. The tragic incident quickly became a significant case for the Metro Nashville Police Department, who launched a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
The efforts of the police led to the arrests of two teenage suspects, cousins Quantarius Newsom, 18, and Charvaris Newsom, 19. During an interview with investigators, Quantarius Newsom admitted his involvement in the crime. In a significant development, Quantarius later testified against his cousin, Charvaris. This testimony proved to be a crucial element in the prosecution's case.
On May 30, 2018, a jury found Charvaris Newsom guilty of first-degree felony murder and especially aggravated robbery for his role in the death of Ian Patterson. The conviction brought a measure of resolution to a case that had deeply affected the victim's family and the community.
