In the spring of 2016, a young man's life was cut short in a parking lot in Nashville, Tennessee. Eighteen-year-old Aiad Malo, a male from Nashville, was fatally shot on the evening of April 1, 2016. The incident unfolded in the vacant parking lot of a former Kmart store situated on Nolensville Pike. An altercation, reportedly connected to a drug transaction, escalated to gunfire, and Aiad Malo was struck multiple times.
At the time of the shooting, he was unarmed.
The investigation into the homicide revealed a tragic backstory between the victim and his assailant. Vana Mustafa, who was seventeen years old at the time, had grown up with Aiad Malo. However, their friendship had soured, leading to a falling out that investigators identified as the motive for the murder. On the night of the shooting, a Metropolitan Nashville Police Department officer, responding to an unrelated call nearby, heard the gunshots and discovered shell casings and a significant amount of blood in the parking lot. Aiad Malo was later left at the emergency room of Southern Hills Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Vana Mustafa was arrested and faced serious charges, including premeditated first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, attempted first-degree murder, and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. Due to the severity of the crime, his case was transferred from juvenile court to be tried in Davidson County Criminal Court. In December of 2017, a jury found Vana Mustafa guilty of the premeditated first-degree murder of Aiad Malo. For his crime, Mustafa was sentenced to life in prison. The trial brought some measure of closure to Aiad Malo's family, who were described as a large and close-knit group, devastated by the loss of Aiad, who was the youngest of nine children along with his twin brother.
