In a quiet home on Mimosa Road in Sumter, South Carolina, a domestic tragedy unfolded that ended the life of 79-year-old Sherri Louise Swoger Redmond. On the afternoon of December 11, 2024, police responded to a report of a shooting and discovered the Caucasian female deceased inside the residence from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The scene held an immediate and primary person of interest: her 78-year-old ex-husband, William Forrest Redmond Jr.
Despite their divorce, the couple
continued to share the same home, a living arrangement that concealed an ongoing dispute, according to authorities. On that Wednesday afternoon, the conflict escalated to a fatal conclusion. When officers arrived at the home around 4:30 p.m., they found William Redmond at the scene of his ex-wife's death. He was taken into custody by the Sumter Police Department.
Following the initial investigation, William Forrest Redmond Jr. was arrested and charged with the murder of his former spouse. He also faced a charge of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. As the investigation proceeded, he was booked and held at the Sumter County Detention Center. The Sumter County Coroner's Office officially identified Sherri Redmond and scheduled an autopsy to be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to determine the precise cause of her death.
Originally from East Liverpool, Ohio, Sherri Redmond was known in her community as an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sumter. She is survived by her three sons, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were left to mourn her sudden and violent death. A memorial service was planned to be held in her honor at her church in the weeks following the tragic incident.
