In Sumter, South Carolina, a young woman's life was tragically cut short in a devastating incident that also claimed the life of her younger half-brother. Eighteen-year-old Khanesia Sincere Comder, a Black female born on June 28, 2006, was known for her caring nature and positive aspirations. Friends and family remembered her as smart, beautiful, and possessing a huge heart, always willing to give to others.
She had dreams of becoming a cook, a kindergarten teacher, or serving her country.
On August 23, 2024, Khanesia and her 16-year-old half-brother, Ny'heem Burgess, were at the Palmetto Inn on North Washington Street when a firearm was mishandled, resulting in critical injuries to both teenagers. Khanesia was rushed to Prisma Health Tuomey, where she succumbed to her injuries four days later on August 27, 2024. Tragically, her brother Ny'heem passed away the following day at Prisma Health Richland.
The Sumter Police Department launched an investigation into the shootings. After a thorough review of the evidence, authorities determined that the incident was a tragic accident stemming from the mishandling of a gun. As a result of this finding, no arrests were made, and no suspects were sought in connection with the deaths of Khanesia and Ny'heem. The community was left to mourn the loss of two young lives, a sentiment echoed by the local coroner's office which confirmed the accidental nature of the shootings.
In the wake of this tragedy, Khanesia's family was faced with the immense emotional and financial burden of planning funerals for two children. The community rallied around them, organizing car washes and a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the unexpected expenses. The deep bond between Khanesia and her brother was evident to all who knew them; her father recalled how the two were inseparable. A viewing for both siblings was held on September 6, 2024, followed by a celebration of their lives on September 7 at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, with their final resting place at Bradford Cemetery.
