In the early hours of a Friday morning in Sumter, South Carolina, a visit between acquaintances turned deadly, ending the life of 33-year-old Shameka Nathaniel. On October 22, 2021, Nathaniel, a resident of nearby Lynchburg, was at the Wilmaranne Apartments on Broad Street when an argument erupted between her and another woman. The verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in a single, fatal gunshot.
