In the early hours of a Friday morning in Sumter, South Carolina, a visit between acquaintances turned deadly, ending the life of 33-year-old Shameka Nathaniel. On October 22, 2021, Nathaniel, a resident of nearby Lynchburg, was at the Wilmaranne Apartments on Broad Street when an argument erupted between her and another woman. The verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation, culminating in a single, fatal gunshot.
Responding to the scene at approximately 1:30 a.m., Sumter
Police Department officers were met by 29-year-old Anissa Rena Robinson, who identified herself as the shooter as she exited one of the apartments. Inside, they discovered the wounded Nathaniel. Emergency medical personnel rendered aid at the scene before she was transported to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, but her injuries proved too severe, and she succumbed to them shortly after arrival.
The preliminary investigation suggested that both Nathaniel and Robinson were visiting a resident of the apartment complex when the fatal argument began. Following her self-identification as the shooter, Anissa Rena Robinson was taken into custody. She was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Robinson was booked and held at the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center pending further legal proceedings. An autopsy was scheduled by the Sumter County Coroner's Office to officially determine the cause of death.
