In the early morning hours of a Sunday in late November, a sense of normalcy was shattered on the Cross Bronx Expressway. Twenty-one-year-old Ivan DeJesus Bueno, a resident of Paterson, New Jersey, was a passenger in a 2010 Toyota Corolla, traveling westbound with his 21-year-old girlfriend and a 27-year-old male driver. The group was reportedly returning home from a party they had attended earlier.
As their vehicle moved along the expressway, nearing the Alexander Hamilton Bridge,
gunfire suddenly erupted from an unknown vehicle. Both Bueno and his girlfriend were struck by the bullets. The driver, who was unharmed, sped to Columbia University Irving Medical Center in Washington Heights. From there, the two victims were transferred to Harlem Hospital.
Despite the urgent medical attention, Ivan DeJesus Bueno succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head. His girlfriend was treated for a gunshot wound to her shoulder and was reported to be in stable condition. As of the days immediately following the shooting, the New York Police Department had not made any arrests in connection with the incident. The motive for the shooting remained unclear, and no description of the suspect or the vehicle they were in had been released to the public. The investigation into the sudden and violent death of the young man is ongoing.
