On a late evening in the Bronx, 56-year-old Kevin Roberts, a Black male, was fatally shot multiple times in the torso. The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on June 19, 2023, outside an apartment building located at 976 Simpson Street in the Longwood section of the borough. Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene and transported Roberts to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead.
The assailant fled the scene in a vehicle immediately following the
shooting. For about a month, no arrests were made in connection with the homicide, leaving the case open as detectives from the New York Police Department continued their investigation into the fatal shooting.
On July 22, 2023, authorities announced an arrest in the case. Jeremy Mendez, a 30-year-old resident of the Bronx, was taken into custody. He has been charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.
