Don Joseph Burt, a 25-year-old California Highway Patrol officer, tragically lost his life on July 13, 1996, in Fullerton, California. Officer Burt was conducting a routine traffic stop on Nutwood Avenue when he discovered that the driver was operating the vehicle on a suspended license. As he began impounding the vehicle, he found forged payroll checks and counterfeit traveler's checks in the trunk.
When Officer Burt attempted to question the suspect about these items, the suspect produced a 9 mm handgun and shot him six times. Despite wearing a safety vest, which prevented fatal wounds from the initial shots, Officer Burt was lying on the ground when the suspect approached and fired a seventh, fatal shot to his head, killing him instantly.
The suspect then stole Officer Burt's weapon and keys, fled the scene in Burt's patrol car, and was later apprehended in Houston, Texas. The investigation revealed that the suspect had a history of criminal activity and had attempted to have witnesses and the deputy district attorney involved in the case murdered. The suspect eventually pleaded guilty to federal murder-for-hire charges and the murder of Officer Burt. On June 23, 2000, he was sentenced to death.
Officer Burt's death had a profound impact on his family and the law enforcement community. His wife gave birth to their son two months after his murder, and his father, who also served with the California Highway Patrol, along with other family members in law enforcement, were deeply affected by the loss. The case was complex and involved significant legal proceedings, including threats against those involved in the prosecution.
