In the early evening of December 3, 2024, the life of 49-year-old Lavaughn E. Lewis, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. At approximately 5:19 p.m., officers from the Topeka Police Department were dispatched to the 2000 block of Southwest 12th Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Lewis with life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate response and medical attention provided at the
scene, Lavaughn Lewis succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His death marked the city's 20th homicide of the year. The investigation into the fatal shooting was promptly initiated by the Topeka Police Department's homicide unit.
As of mid-December 2024, the investigation into Lewis's death remained active and ongoing. Authorities had not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the case. The Topeka Police Department has continued to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the investigation, encouraging witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. A memorial service to honor his life was held on December 14, 2024.
