Jonah Slawson was a humble and loving person, known for his big heart and for always cracking jokes. His mother described the 28-year-old Black man as a "hardworking man and good father." He was a devoted father to five children—Shanzlee, Jazen, Sailor, Kaizlee, and Kaiyah—and a cherished brother to his six siblings. A construction laborer who was respected by many in his Waianae, Hawaii, community, Jonah was remembered by friends as someone who loved a good laugh.
On the night of
December 19, 2024, Jonah was outside a home with friends on Maliona Street, near Maili Community Park. At around 9 p.m., a white Toyota Camry drove past the group as several gunshots were fired from the vehicle. Jonah was struck in his lower body. Emergency crews rushed him to Queen’s Medical Center - West Oahu in critical condition, but he did not survive his injuries. The gunfire also damaged a nearby vacant residence and three parked cars.
In the hours and days that followed, loved ones gathered at the scene to mourn Jonah's death. The Honolulu Police Department launched a homicide investigation, and witnesses reported seeing the white Toyota Camry flee after the shooting. Investigators worked the case through the weekend.
On Sunday, December 22, police arrested three suspects in Waianae in connection with the fatal shooting: two 17-year-old boys and a 19-year-old man. They faced potential charges including second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and firearm offenses. However, after police conferred with prosecutors, all three individuals were released pending further investigation.
In the wake of the tragedy, Jonah’s sister, Jadeane Slawson, organized a GoFundMe campaign to help the family with funeral costs, writing, "No parent should be burying their own child." The violent loss deeply affected the neighborhood, with residents expressing shock that it happened so close to home. As of December 2024, the investigation into Jonah Slawson's death is ongoing and the case remains unsolved.
