On December 15, 2024, at approximately 10:08 p.m., deputies from the Polk County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at the residence of 32-year-old Gregory Maynard in Davenport, Florida. Upon arrival, they discovered Maynard in his bedroom with a single gunshot wound to his head. An adult woman and a child were present in the home at the time but did not directly witness the incident.
Initial evidence and interviews suggest that Maynard died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Medical Examiner's Office is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death.
Maynard was a dual-certified deputy sheriff, having joined the Polk County Sheriff's Office as a detention deputy in 2015 and becoming a deputy sheriff in January 2017. He was most recently assigned to Central District patrol. He was not married and had no dependents.
Sheriff Grady Judd expressed condolences, stating, "Deputy Maynard’s death is such a tragedy. Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with his family, friends, and coworkers." He also encouraged anyone with feelings of self-harm to seek help through the Florida Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling or texting 988.
