Chosen Morris, a 4-year-old African American boy from Davenport, Florida, tragically lost his life on February 21, 2025, in what authorities have described as an accidental shooting. The incident occurred at the Morris family home on Citrus Landing Boulevard while the family was preparing for a night out. Chosen, excited about the evening plans, entered the garage and climbed into the driver's seat of the family vehicle. While inside, he discovered a Smith & Wesson M&P.

At the time of the shooting, Chosen's father, Robert Morris, was in the bathroom getting ready, while his mother, Quinta Morris, was working on her computer in the master bedroom. She reported hearing a "pop" sound but initially assumed that one of her older children, ages 7 and 11, had broken something. Upon realizing that Chosen was missing, she searched the house and found the door to the garage open. When she entered, she discovered her youngest son in the vehicle with a severe gunshot wound. The parents immediately rushed Chosen to AdventHealth Heart of Florida, a hospital located two miles away, but despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead nearly 24 hours later.
Davenport Police Chief Steve Parker described the incident as a tragic accident. Authorities believe that Chosen had entered the vehicle to wait for his family and, in doing so, found the unsecured firearm. The police chief emphasized the importance of firearm safety, urging gun owners to always be aware of the location of their weapons and to secure them properly. He also recommended using trigger locks and educating children about firearm dangers.
Following an investigation, Davenport police announced that no criminal charges would be filed against Chosen's parents. Chief Parker stated that his department would consult with the State Attorney’s Office, but based on the available information, there were no intentions to pursue charges. He expressed sympathy for the Morris family, acknowledging the devastating nature of the loss and extending prayers to them during this difficult time.
