Devyne Pritchett, a 19-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on September 6, 2020, in Davenport, Florida. The incident occurred at the Landings at Four Corners apartment complex. According to reports, Pritchett had been staying with friends at a nearby Best Western hotel. In the early hours of the morning, he ingested acid, which led to erratic behavior.
Around 6 a.m., he wandered into the apartment complex, wearing only shorts and socks, and began acting bizarrely.
A resident walking his dog encountered Pritchett, who made a gun gesture with his fingers and said "pow, pow, pow." The resident, feeling threatened, hurried to his apartment and informed his roommate. They called 911 and went outside to look for Pritchett. Meanwhile, Bryan Medeiros, another resident, and his fiancée went outside to smoke. Upon learning about the situation, Medeiros retrieved a gun from his car.
Medeiros and his fiancée returned to their apartment, but Medeiros soon heard noises and went to investigate. He found Pritchett lying on his back on a landing. As Pritchett got up and started walking down the stairs, Medeiros followed. When Pritchett approached Medeiros with his pants down, Medeiros shot him. Despite being shot, Pritchett continued to follow Medeiros, who fired additional shots. Pritchett eventually fell to the ground and died.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd stated that Medeiros used excessive force in the incident. Pritchett, who was 5'5" and weighed 125 pounds, was unarmed and under the influence of drugs. Medeiros was charged with manslaughter and carrying a concealed weapon. The investigation revealed that Pritchett's behavior, while erratic and potentially alarming, did not justify the level of force used by Medeiros. The case highlighted the complexities of self-defense laws and the importance of assessing the proportionality of force in such situations.
