On November 21, 2024, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Birmingham Police Department officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert indicating around 20 rounds fired in the 300 block of 25th Street Southwest, in the city's Germania Park neighborhood. Upon arrival, they found 22-year-old DeCarlos Perez Smith Jr. lying unresponsive in the roadway, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
