On March 15, 2023, at approximately 1 a.m., a tragic shooting occurred at the Bitter End nightclub, located at the intersection of Elm Street and Malcolm X Boulevard in Dallas' Deep Ellum district. The incident resulted in the deaths of 37-year-old Rickey Gossett and 30-year-old Danielle Jones.
According to the Dallas Police Department, Gossett was seated on the patio of the nightclub when an unidentified male suspect approached and opened fire, striking him multiple times.
Tragically, one of the bullets penetrated a window, fatally wounding Jones, who was inside the establishment and uninvolved in the altercation. A third individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries from a bullet fragment and was treated at a local hospital.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled northbound on Elm Street. Witnesses described him as a Black male, approximately six feet tall with a slender build, wearing a black hoodie featuring a design on the front, shorts, and a ski mask.
In the ensuing investigation, the Dallas Police Department released surveillance footage and sought public assistance to identify the perpetrator. By June 1, 2023, authorities had identified and arrested 25-year-old Tommy Spell in connection with the double homicide. Spell, who was already in custody on unrelated felony charges, including aggravated assault and robbery, was charged with capital murder for the deaths of Gossett and Jones.
The motive behind the targeted attack on Gossett remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing. The tragic loss of both Gossett and Jones has deeply affected their families and the Dallas community, prompting discussions about safety and security measures in popular nightlife areas like Deep Ellum.
