On May 6, 2023, a tragic mass shooting occurred at the Allen Premium Outlets in Allen, Texas, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, including 3-year-old James Cho. James was at the mall with his family—his parents, Kyu Song Cho, 37, and Cindy Cho, 35, and his 6-year-old brother, William—when the shooting took place. The family had been visiting the mall to celebrate William's recent sixth birthday.
Tragically, James, along with his parents, lost their lives in the attack, while William survived after being hospitalized and later released from the ICU.
The assailant, identified as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, opened fire at the mall, causing widespread panic and chaos. Garcia was equipped with multiple firearms during the attack. An Allen Police Department officer, who was at the mall on an unrelated call, responded promptly to the gunfire, engaged Garcia, and fatally shot him, thereby preventing further loss of life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials conducted investigations into Garcia's background to determine a possible motive. Reports indicated that Garcia had legally obtained eight firearms and may have scouted the mall prior to the attack.
