On May 23, 2023, in Nash, Texas, 5-year-old Oliver Olalde was tragically killed alongside his parents, Reuben Olalde and Aida Garcia, and his adult sister, Lisbet Olalde. The family's deaths were discovered after a concerned co-worker of Lisbet's visited their home on Lemon Acres when she failed to appear for work. Upon arrival, the co-worker encountered 18-year-old Cesar Olalde, Oliver's older brother, who allegedly confessed to killing his family because he believed they were "cannibals"
planning to eat him.
Law enforcement responded to the scene, leading to a brief standoff with Cesar, who had barricaded himself inside the residence. After negotiations, he surrendered and was taken into custody. Inside the home, officers found the bodies of the four victims in a bathroom, with evidence suggesting they had been shot in various locations throughout the house before being moved to the bathroom. Multiple spent cartridge casings and blood spatter were found on multiple surfaces.
Cesar Olalde was charged with capital murder of multiple persons and capital murder of a person under 10 years of age. He was held in the Bowie County jail with bail set at $10 million. In October 2024, as part of a plea agreement that spared the surviving family members the trauma of a trial, Cesar pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and a single count of injury to a child. He was sentenced to two concurrent life sentences for each count of murder, with additional consecutive sentences for the other charges, totaling life in prison plus 50 years.
Mental health evaluations played a significant role in the proceedings, with experts initially split on Cesar's competency to stand trial. Despite these concerns, the plea deal was reached in accordance with the wishes of the surviving family members, who preferred to avoid the death penalty due to their religious beliefs. Cesar Olalde remains incarcerated, serving his sentence without the possibility of parole.
