Houston Fire Department personnel arrived shortly thereafter and pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Subsequent investigations by the Houston Police Department's Homicide Division identified a 15-year-old female as the shooter. During interviews, she claimed to have acted in self-defense when she shot Vences. After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, authorities decided to present the case to a Harris County grand jury to determine whether any charges should be filed.
Dwayne Vences was born on March 23, 1990, in Houston, Texas, to Maria Teresa Vences and Troy Beckler. He was known for his generous heart, love for family, and passion for cooking alongside his grandmother. Vences had a strong work ethic and enjoyed activities such as riding bicycles and socializing with friends. He is survived by his parents, siblings, and extended family members.
Funeral services for Vences were held at Funeraria Del Angel Crespo in Houston, with visitation on August 2, 2023, and a funeral service on August 3, 2023. He was laid to rest at Carmen Nelson Bostick Cemetery in Tomball, Texas.
