On August 23, 2023, in Odessa, Texas, a confrontation between Jason Crowder, 28, and Zacimbricc Dizhay White, 24, escalated into a fatal shooting. The incident occurred in the 700 block of Snyder Street, where surveillance footage captured the sequence of events. Crowder arrived in a gold-colored Kia van and was approached by White. A verbal altercation ensued, during which Crowder reportedly called White a "rat."
The situation quickly turned violent as White drew a firearm and began shooting at Crowder. Crowder sought cover behind a nearby vehicle and returned fire. Despite his efforts, Crowder was struck multiple times and fell to the ground. White then approached Crowder and fired additional shots at close range before fleeing the scene in a Dodge Challenger.
Both men were transported to Odessa Regional Medical Center by private vehicles. Crowder succumbed to his injuries on August 28, 2023. White, who sustained a gunshot wound to his right armpit, was treated and later arrested. Initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder following Crowder's death. White was also held on two outstanding aggravated robbery warrants from Collin County, with bonds totaling $125,000.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, White's defense attorney argued that he acted in self-defense during the altercation. An Ector County jury acquitted White of the murder charge but convicted him of manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance. On August 5, 2024, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the drug-related offense.
