On June 14, 2024, 65-year-old James Francis "Jimmy" Johnson, a resident of Odessa, Texas, was tragically killed in a shooting incident at his home on Newcomb Drive. Johnson, who had lived with cerebral palsy and was wheelchair-bound, was reportedly involved in a dispute over living arrangements with two individuals who had been staying at his residence for a couple of days.
The Odessa Police Department responded to reports of gunshots around 3:39 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a trail of blood leading to Johnson's residence, where they found him deceased from an apparent gunshot wound to the neck. Two individuals, 18-year-old Brayden Scott Roupp and a 16-year-old female, were detained at the scene. Roupp confessed to the shooting, stating it stemmed from an argument over their living arrangements.
Surveillance footage obtained by investigators showed Roupp and the 16-year-old female running toward Johnson, who was in the street. Roupp fired multiple shots at Johnson before both suspects dragged his body back into the house. Both individuals were arrested and charged with murder, a first-degree felony. Roupp also faced charges of tampering with physical evidence involving a human corpse.
Further investigation revealed that the 16-year-old female, identified as Adrianna Vincent, would be tried as an adult in connection with Johnson's murder. She faced additional charges, including tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance. Roupp was also linked to a separate shooting incident that occurred 11 days prior, leading to additional charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Johnson's family, particularly his brother, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Jimmy's lifelong battle with cerebral palsy and his kind nature. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death continued as the community mourned the tragic loss of a vulnerable individual.
