On January 6, 2023, 15-year-old Bryan Sanchez was fatally shot in Odessa, Texas. The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. when Ector County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to reports of a gunshot victim at a fast-food restaurant on West County Road. They found Sanchez inside a Ford Escape with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He was transported to Medical Center Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations revealed that Sanchez and a 17-year-old friend had driven to a residence on Cielo Alto to meet with individuals identified as 17-year-olds Omar Matthew Gutierrez and Thomas Terrazas. Upon arrival, Gutierrez and Terrazas approached the vehicle, both armed. Gutierrez reportedly demanded the occupants' belongings and, during the attempted robbery, fired multiple shots into the vehicle, striking Sanchez. The driver managed to flee the scene and sought help at the fast-food restaurant where deputies later found them.
Following the incident, Gutierrez turned himself in to the sheriff's office and confessed to the shooting. He was arrested on charges of capital murder during the commission of a robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bonds were set at $500,000 for the murder charge and $100,000 for the assault charge. Terrazas was arrested on January 20, 2023, also facing a capital murder charge with a bond set at $500,000.
In April 2024, while awaiting trial for Sanchez's murder, Gutierrez was involved in another criminal incident. He and his brother, 17-year-old Omar Elijah Gutierrez, were arrested for allegedly assaulting and robbing a 15-year-old boy near Odessa High School. The victim reported being attacked by the Gutierrez brothers and a third teenager, who stole personal items from him. Evidence, including a social media video, linked the brothers to the crime. Both were charged with robbery and held on $100,000 bonds each.
As of December 2024, the trials for the charges related to Bryan Sanchez's death and the subsequent robbery case are pending. The community continues to mourn the loss of Sanchez, with memorials and tributes highlighting the impact of gun violence on young lives.
