On October 27, 2023, 18-year-old Kevin Adrian Roman was fatally shot in Odessa, Texas. The Ector County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a gunshot victim at a Dollar General store located at 3rd Street and Knox. Upon arrival, deputies found Roman critically injured; he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries during surgery.
The investigation led authorities to identify 20-year-old Ethan Gabriel Ibarra as a suspect.
Ibarra confessed to shooting Roman during a drug deal that escalated into violence. He also admitted to disposing of two firearms used in the incident. Further inquiry revealed the involvement of 18-year-old Victor Manuel Balderama, who was present during the shooting and assisted in concealing evidence.
During the investigation, Ibarra disclosed information about a second victim, 17-year-old Dillan Elain Zubia, whose body was found near Penwell, Texas. Ibarra claimed that Zubia's death resulted from an accidental shooting by an associate during the same drug deal. However, after analyzing shell casings from both crime scenes, deputies concluded that Ibarra was solely responsible for the deaths of both Roman and Zubia.
Initially, Ibarra was arrested on charges including first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, with a total bond set at $175,000. He was released the following day. Subsequently, a capital murder warrant was issued, citing the murder of more than one person during the criminal transaction. Ibarra was re-arrested and held on a $1,000,000 bond. Balderama faced charges of tampering with physical evidence and a human corpse, with bonds totaling $75,000.
Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis described the incident as a tragic outcome of a minor drug deal, emphasizing the senseless loss of life over a small amount of marijuana. He urged parents to be vigilant about their children's activities to prevent such tragedies.
