On December 9, 2025, a tragedy struck a residential complex in Odessa, Texas, claiming the life of Jacob Martinez, a 9-year-old Latino male, along with two of his family members. Officers from the Odessa Police Department responded to reports of shots fired at the 87th Street Apartments on Hunter Miller Way around 5:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of Jacob, his 13-year-old sister Kylie Madison Martinez, and their 39-year-old mother, Jessica Rodriguez, inside their home.
All three had sustained fatal gunshot wounds in what authorities later described as a targeted attack.
The investigation quickly identified a 15-year-old juvenile male as the primary suspect. Police revealed that the teenager was the ex-boyfriend of Jacob's surviving older sister. According to law enforcement, the suspect had initially formulated a plan to confront his ex-girlfriend at her school earlier that day but altered his course of action, instead proceeding to the family's apartment. He allegedly entered the residence and shot the mother and her two younger children before fleeing the scene on foot. The older sister, who was the intended target of the suspect's original plan, was not present at the apartment during the shooting and was physically unharmed.
Law enforcement officers located and apprehended the 15-year-old suspect on Andrews Highway approximately 40 minutes after the shooting was reported. He was taken into custody without further incident and detained at the Ector County Youth Center. The juvenile has been charged with capital murder of multiple persons. Odessa Police Chief Mike Gerke addressed the media following the event, characterizing the shooting as a cowardly and deliberate act of violence that devastated the local community.
Jacob was remembered by his family as an intelligent and affectionate child who loved video games and dreamed of becoming a professional YouTuber. His obituary noted his competitive spirit and his caring nature, highlighting the close bond he shared with his relatives. He is survived by his father, Roy Casey Martinez, and his stepmother, along with his grandparents and extended family who were left to mourn the sudden loss of three family members just weeks before the holidays.
