Brandon Lee Russell, a 24-year-old male of unspecified ethnicity, tragically died on September 30, 2015, in Odessa, Texas. He was employed by West Texas Auto Recovery and was attempting to repossess a car at Acacia Park Apartments when he was fatally shot. The incident occurred after an argument with the vehicle's owner, Khalifah Ibn Muhammad, who was 29 years old.
Khalifah Ibn Muhammad confronted Russell and his 27-year-old co-worker, Jimmy Tilghman, as they were hooking up the car to a
tow truck. Muhammad claimed that the repossession was illegal and got into the tow truck. Tilghman ordered him out, brandishing a stun gun, and Muhammad eventually exited the truck. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots, and police found Russell in a black Nissan Sentra with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Medical Center Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Muhammad was arrested without incident at a truck stop the following morning and charged with murder. He was later found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. The case highlighted the dangers faced by repo men and the potential for violent confrontations during vehicle repossessions.
