On August 27, 2023, 30-year-old Sergeant Alfredo Martinez was found dead from a gunshot wound at Fort Cavazos, Texas. Another soldier, Specialist Rene Heber, was charged with accessory to murder after the fact, accessory to involuntary manslaughter after the fact, and obstructing justice, due to his alleged involvement in tampering with evidence and providing false statements to law enforcement.
The circumstances leading up to Martinez's death involved a night of heavy drinking among the three soldiers at a residence on the base. Both Lowery and Heber have pleaded not guilty to the charges and are awaiting court-martial proceedings.
