On November 11, 2023, at approximately 3:35 a.m., Houston police responded to a shooting incident at a residence located at 14814 Hiram Clarke Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered 17-year-old Jonathan Adame Reyes unresponsive in the garage, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. A second victim, a 16-year-old male, was found in the roadway with similar injuries.
Paramedics from the Houston Fire Department pronounced Reyes deceased at the scene, while the 16-year-old was transported to a local hospital in critical condition; he was later treated and released.
Following an extensive investigation, authorities identified 19-year-old Dennis Armenta Jr. as the primary suspect in the case. On March 19, 2024, officers from the Houston Police Department's Gang Division Crime Reduction Unit arrested Armenta without incident. During questioning, Armenta admitted to his involvement in the shooting. Subsequently, he was charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 487th State District Court.
The tragic death of Jonathan Adame Reyes underscores the pervasive issue of gun violence affecting Houston's youth. Data from the Houston Chronicle indicates that since 2018, there have been 279 firearm-related deaths among children in Harris County, with a significant proportion of the victims being teenagers.
As the legal proceedings against Armenta continue, the community remains hopeful that justice will be served for the victims and their families. The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and the community in addressing and preventing youth-involved gun violence in Houston.
