In mid-July 2018, Houston experienced a series of tragic events linked to 46-year-old Jose Gilberto Rodriguez, a Hispanic male. Rodriguez, a parolee and registered sex offender, was implicated in a violent crime spree that resulted in the deaths of three individuals. The first known victim was 62-year-old Pamela Johnson, a Hispanic female, who was found shot to death in her Cypress home on July 13, 2018. Her vehicle was later discovered abandoned at Willowbrook Mall.

The following day, 28-year-old Allie Barrow, a Hispanic female, was found fatally shot inside the Mattress Firm store where she worked, located near Willowbrook Mall. Her body was discovered between two mattresses in the back of the store. On July 16, 2018, 57-year-old Edward Magaña, a Hispanic male, was found dead from a gunshot wound inside a Mattress One store on the North Freeway. These incidents instilled fear throughout the Houston community.

Authorities connected Rodriguez to these crimes through surveillance footage and forensic evidence. He was also suspected in a home invasion on July 9, 2018, involving an elderly couple, and the shooting and robbery of a METROLift driver on July 16, 2018. Rodriguez was apprehended on July 17, 2018, after a brief vehicle pursuit. He was subsequently charged with multiple counts of capital murder.

This series of events highlighted significant concerns regarding parolee monitoring and public safety, leading to discussions about potential reforms in the criminal justice system.
